Well-being at work

Working in the HR field, one of my concerns besides employee’s development is their well-being.

What makes you perform better at work? Well…we all perform at our best when we are feeling good.

Latest research shows that employee well-being is a better predictor of people’s productivity than job satisfaction. It has been shown to be a key determinant of organizational performance and the number one driver of employee engagement.

Understanding what drives happiness and balance for employees is essential in any well-being project. So an assessment is required to identify employee’s needs and desires, but generally speaking is important to take into account physical, social, emotional, environmental, developmental and occupational considerations all within the context of the workplace.

Here are some examples of activities that can be introduced in a well-being program. These ideas are collected from employees and address the work culture, the physical design of workplaces, sport activities, healthy living and opportunities to learn and progress. In the organisation I was the Project Manager for the Well Being HR program and managed to gather the employees wishes and to put some of them into practice. This is what came out of it:

Massage at the office

Some just dream of it but some companies make it happen. Do not imagine that employees get dressed and spent 30 minutes or more in the massage. For 15 minutes you can benefit of from an energizing massage for your back, neck, head and arms.

ReCreation Zones
A warm and cozy area where employees can recharge their batteries, reach the level of positive energy they need through the work day and the strength and focus necessary to perform.

Books
Offer employees access to personal and professional development through books or audiobooks. Bookster is a useful resource in this case.http://www.bookster.ro/

ReCreation workshops

Offer your employees the opportunity to develop their passions through specific Creative Workshops like Deco Art, Floral arrangements, Make-up, Nutrition, Photography, Style and Personal Image. Smart Experience has a vast portfolio of well-being workshops. http://wellbeing.smartexperience.ro/

Theme Days Theme days are a good opportunity to make from an ordinary work day a celebration of Well-being and healthy living. Celebrate The international day of Sports, Summer in the office (the International day of The Sun), Vitalitee (healthy eating) and The month of Giving in December.
You can wear sunglasses and fancy hats, eat ice-cream when you’ll celebrate Summer in the Office and in December you can engage in charitable activities.

Sport activities
You can promote a healthy living by involving employees in sport activities like cycling, ping pong, football and volley. Offer employees bikes that can be borrowed, organize football championship within your organization or with other companies, ping pong championship and soo on.

Pressure Barometer
The pressure barometer is a tool that can be used by the leader to view the stress/pressure level within his team, with the purpose of acting immediately, in order to create a balanced working environment.

We all know the importance the work-life balance in employee’s productivity and creativity. Researches show that those employees who were more favorable toward their organization’s efforts to support work-life balance also indicated a greater pride in their organization, a willingness to recommend it as a place to work and higher overall job satisfaction.

This is because happy and fulfilled employees enjoy their work more. Which means they are less likely to leave, they get more work done and go that extra mile.
